See a podiatrist for an ingrown toenail if there is redness, swelling, or drainage; if it keeps coming back; if it has not improved after a few days of warm soaks; or if you have diabetes or poor circulation. Treatment is a quick in-office procedure under local anesthetic.
Signs of infection
Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or red streaks should be seen promptly.
Recurring ingrown nails
If the same nail keeps ingrowing, the nail root on that edge can be treated so it does not regrow.
Diabetes and circulation
Small foot infections can progress quickly. Do not attempt home surgery.
What to expect
The toe is numbed, the nail edge removed, and you walk out in comfortable shoes. Most people return to normal activity within a day or two.
