How long does bunion surgery recovery take?

Most people walk in a protective shoe or boot shortly after bunion surgery, return to wide regular shoes around six to ten weeks, and resume most activities by three to six months. Residual swelling can take up to a year to fully settle. Timelines vary with the procedure.

Weeks 0–2

Rest and elevation are the priority. Swelling control during this period makes the rest of recovery easier.

Weeks 2–6

Protected walking continues. X-rays confirm the bone is healing in position.

Weeks 6–10

Most patients transition into wide, supportive shoes. Some benefit from physical therapy.

Months 3–6

Return to exercise and most activities. The foot continues to feel better month by month.

What affects recovery

The procedure performed, bone healing, smoking status, and how consistently early instructions are followed. Minimally invasive approaches may reduce early soft-tissue disruption, but bone still needs time to heal.
